Lots of Important WCGS Activities in the Next 7 Days

June is “bustin’ out all over” for area members of the Wood County, Texas Genealogical Society (WCGS) in the four-day period of this next weekend and Monday. Your participation is requested and needed at both MAJOR events.

1. A fundraiser garage sale to gather money for activities such as the next year’s subscription (at the Quitman Public Library) for Ancestry.com is Friday and Saturday, June 15-16 on the sidewalk in front of the library for the Highway 37 Garage Sale. We need (a) volunteers to set up starting at 8 a.m. and to work, visit, and have fun during the day (all or some of the time), (b) donations for the sale which you can bring with you or drop off or call a local member to pickup prior to Friday. (You can call Deason at 903-769-0792, email to wcgstx@gmail.com starting as soon as you see this if you need a donation pickup. He will call on others to help with the pickup).

2. A very special Everyone-Needs-ToAttend meeting of the Wood County Genealogical Society Monday evening, June 18, at the library starting at 6 p.m. with a social time with refreshments and a special To-Be-Revealed program (Don’t you just love a mystery?) which needs the attendance of all area members possible. Please make a special effort to attend. Also, no Peralta’s gathering before the meeting this time only.

You can expect multiple and more reminders this week. This is a special event! We need a  big turnout.

Special things are happening for the WCGS this week. Please help make it even more special by your attendance.

Dues Bylaw Changes Made at Semi-annual Business Meeting

An anticipation of increased general expenses as well as continuing of the Ancestrylibrary.com subscription for the Quitman Public Library were reasons offered leading to the adoption of a bylaws change of membership dues to $25 starting in September of the 2012-13 society year. Also, an additional charge for multiple family members was dropped from the dues structure. A single or multiple family members in the same home will be at the single rate of $25.

This took place at the March semi-annual business meeting, March 19. A report of a balance of $1,960.10 was made by Treasurer Wayne McCluney, and the minutes from the September business meeting were presented by Secretary Shirley Patrick and accepted. Both these reports are on the members’ only page which can be accessed from the link at the top right of this page.

In addition to the May trip to the Alba Public Library and Museum and to Parrott’s park in Lindale and the June trip to the Genealogy research room at the Dallas Public library (both of which are listed in more detail on previous posts to this page), the date of June 15 was named as the date for the society participation in the Highway 37 Garage Sale. The date will be confirmed and more on these events will be published here as available nearer to the time of the events.

It was also announced that the program for the April meeting of the society will be a presentation on the 1940 Census by Lisa McKinney of Edgewood.

Our Fun Fall Fundraiser Tables at the Hwy. 80 Garage Sale

We have the location set for our tables for our Fun Fall fundraising event at the Highway 80 Garage Sale Saturday, October 16.

We will set up on the sidewalk in front of the Community Bank across the street from the Dairy Queen on Highway 80 in downtown Mineola.

For this to be a success, we need members to clean out closets, storage rooms, under beds, trunks of cars and every place else you are keeping goods you want to get rid of or will eventually want to get rid of.

We also need workers who want to come share in the fun to show up in the 7-7:30 a.m. time frame Saturday, Oct. 16 to help set up tables and put out items for sale. Then we need folks to stay around and help us with the sale and have fun all day.

We will probably finish about 4 p.m. Saturday, so if you can’t come and stay all day, come when you can.

If you are bringing items to sell that day, try to have them there no later than 7:30 p.m. If you have items but can’t get over there with them, call Deason Hunt at 903-769-0792 or send me an email at netexas@gmail.com, and I’ll arrange someone to pick them up.

Please put a price sticker or tape with price on your items. Remember that people are looking for bargains.

Also, be aware that we are planning to donate unsold items to a charitable group.

If you are planning to donate items for sale or will be available to work at the sale, let me know at netexas@gmail.com or 903-769-0792.

We are gonna have fun, fun, fun ’til daddy takes the T-bird away!

Water Beetle Cherokee Program Nov. 16

Kathy Lynn and Joe Copeland will present a second program on “Cherokee Culture, Artifacts and Traditional Stories” at the regular monthly meeting Monday, November 16th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Quitman Public Library, 202 E. Goode St. in Quitman, Texas.

Members and the general public which is always invited to our meetings should feel free to bring friends and acquaintances.

Kathy is a Texas Touring Artist and was recently funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Kathy’s husband Joe Copeland is now a big part of the presentation, and he has things to show of interest to everyone, also.

For display, they will be bringing their Pyramid Tent, the artifact exhibit, as well as the living history exhibit for life in the 1750’s-1800’s for the Cherokee. The latter does include household items, foods, medicinal herbs, etc, such as clothing, toys and games and more.
Kathy will be telling Traditional Cherokee Stories with her Story Table.

She will have a short PowerPoint presentation on culture and history. This PowerPoint presentation covers a brief history of the Cherokee before Joe and Kathy “shows and tells” about numerous artifacts that she brings along. Kathy then tells stories that delight all ages. She will have books she has written on the Cherokee Indians and will have Native American and Custom made Jewelry for sale after the meeting.

Prior to the meeting on the 16th, there will be Jewelry Party, 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the library.
Some of the jewelry will be Genuine Turquoise and other natural stones unless otherwise identified. This party will not only include the ladies but the gentlemen are invited, too. There will be games, Prizes, Snacks, and Laughter. Fun will be had by all attending. You won’t want to miss it.
A portion of the sales will be donated to benefit the Wood County Genealogical Society.

For more information, you may call Dorothy Harbin, 903-967-2458, and leave a message.
